Responding to the announcement from the Government on a new net-zero target, Sustainable Aviation Chair Adam Morton said:

“UK aviation welcomes the UK Government’s climate ambition. Despite the impact of Covid on the industry, UK aviation remains fully committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions, but this requires significant Government support to do so.” 

“Sustainable Aviation’s members are leading the way through world-leading innovation in green aviation technology. This effort requires a strong long-term partnership with Government – including through the Jet Zero Council – that boosts support for industry investment over the coming months and through the next critical decade. This means providing the right policy support for sustainable aviation fuels, increasing investment in R&D for new aircraft and engine technologies including hydrogen and electric aircraft technology, and accelerating airspace modernisation. With the right Government action, Britain can both lead the world on Jet Zero and supercharge a green economic recovery, delivering jobs and investment across the UK.”

“Aviation is a uniquely global industry that requires global solutions to avoid simply moving emissions from one country to another, with no appreciable impact on climate change. For this reason, the UK aviation industry is also pushing for a 2050 commitment to net-zero emissions at next year’s ICAO General Assembly.”
